Now and again a product arrives that reminds you of how things used to be in the days when people got excited about release dates.
The current excitement, certainly in the graphics design market, is around the arrival of Adobe Creative Suite 4 (CS4). The suite of products that most people in design and publishing use every hour of every working day is getting a refresh.
Over the past few years Adobe has managed to dislodge the incumbent graphics software specialist Quark from a fair few accounts by promoting its package to a PC as well as Mac audience. That dual platform approach has been crucial because the Mac’s traditional hold in the design community, although still strong, has been attacked increasingly by PCs.
On top of that, the way users work with a product like Creative Suite has included not just designers but other departments that feed into the process, using mainly PCs.
So what does CS4 do that is different to previous versions? Whenever these upgrades come through the vendors always stress that they have taken into consideration the demands of the user community.
Presumably one of the things that came back in the feedback was to make workflow processes easier and those concerns have been addressed with the ability to switch between projects and a lot of common tasks being made part of the system.
Another advance is the inbuilt Flash capabilities that make it much easier designing for the web and multiple browsers. There are also more 3D tools.
But for most people the key will be the ease of use and the ability to weave in and out of the applications that comprise the suite: InDesign,
Illustrator, PhotoShop, Flash Professional, Dreamweaver, Fireworks and Acrobat.
This is one of those products that has the ability to really improve the way people work and to a certain degree the expectations around upgrades are very high as a result.
In terms of placing CS4 in the context of what is going on in design it taps into the growing need for web and animation as well as making it more straightforward for multi-tasking. Bearing in mind the resource strain most people are under, the idea of speeding up tasks is going to be hugely attractive.
From a reseller point of view this is a solid product with a solid price that is a must-stock for those serving the design community as well as those that are increasingly being asked to provide greater creative tools.

What Is Web 2.0

Design Patterns and Business Models for the Next Generation of Software

by Tim O’Reilly
09/30/2005

The bursting of the dot-com bubble in the fall of 2001 marked a turning point for the web. Many people concluded that the web was overhyped, when in fact bubbles and consequent shakeouts appear to be a common feature of all technological revolutions. Shakeouts typically mark the point at which an ascendant technology is ready to take its place at center stage. The pretenders are given the bum’s rush, the real success stories show their strength, and there begins to be an understanding of what separates one from the other.

The concept of “Web 2.0″ began with a conference brainstorming session between O’Reilly and MediaLive International. Dale Dougherty, web pioneer and O’Reilly VP, noted that far from having “crashed”, the web was more important than ever, with exciting new applications and sites popping up with surprising regularity. What’s more, the companies that had survived the collapse seemed to have some things in common. Could it be that the dot-com collapse marked some kind of turning point for the web, such that a call to action such as “Web 2.0″ might make sense? We agreed that it did, and so the Web 2.0 Conference was born.

In the year and a half since, the term “Web 2.0″ has clearly taken hold, with more than 9.5 million citations in Google. But there’s still a huge amount of disagreement about just what Web 2.0 means, with some people decrying it as a meaningless marketing buzzword, and others accepting it as the new conventional wisdom.

This article is an attempt to clarify just what we mean by Web 2.0.

In our initial brainstorming, we formulated our sense of Web 2.0 by example:

Web 1.0

Web 2.0

DoubleClick

–>

Google AdSense

Ofoto

–>

Flickr

Akamai

–>

BitTorrent

mp3.com

–>

Napster

Britannica Online

–>

Wikipedia

personal websites

–>

blogging

evite

–>

upcoming.org and EVDB

domain name speculation

–>

search engine optimization

page views

–>

cost per click

screen scraping

–>

web services

publishing

–>

participation

content management systems

–>

wikis

directories (taxonomy)

–>

tagging (“folksonomy”)

stickiness

–>

syndication

The list went on and on. But what was it that made us identify one application or approach as “Web 1.0″ and another as “Web 2.0″? (The question is particularly urgent because the Web 2.0 meme has become so widespread that companies are now pasting it on as a marketing buzzword, with no real understanding of just what it means. The question is particularly difficult because many of those buzzword-addicted startups are definitely not Web 2.0, while some of the applications we identified as Web 2.0, like Napster and BitTorrent, are not even properly web applications!) We began trying to tease out the principles that are demonstrated in one way or another by the success stories of web 1.0 and by the most interesting of the new applications.

Horizontal and Vertical CSS Menu Tutorial

2005-03-02 – Tutorials provided by Claire from Tanfa

CSS Design, Style and Fun – Musing Over the Possibilities

What follows is an example of how to develop menus similar to the ones shown here and here. This mini-tutorial uses very similar code to cover the main ingredients for both those menus, they can be developed further by adding background images or more color.

Requirements for Both CSS Menus

Grab the HTML

Download the whatever:hover file from Peter Nederlof’s site.

Please view any interim samples in a CSS compliant browser (Firefox or Opera), not IE until the fixes at the end are in place.

Note: Anything we do from this point on will not affect text browsers or non CSS parsing applications. It’s CSS, it will only affect the visual presentation.

Vertical Pop Out Menu

#menu {
width: 12em; /* set width of menu */
background: #eee;
}

#menu ul { /* remove bullets and list indents */
list-style: none;
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
}

/* style, color and size links and headings to suit */
#menu a, #menu h2 {
font: bold 11px/16px arial, helvetica, sans-serif;
display: block;
border-width: 1px;
border-style: solid;
border-color: #ccc #888 #555 #bbb;
margin: 0;
padding: 2px 3px;
}

#menu h2 {
color: #fff;
background: #000;
text-transform: uppercase;
}

#menu a {
color: #000;
background: #efefef;
text-decoration: none;
}

#menu a:hover {
color: #a00;
background: #fff;
}

The CSS above removes the padding/margin and bullets from all the lists, sets the width of the the entire menu and styles the links and heading to suit.

View the results so far, if you like, remembering to view with a non-IE browser please. Use your back button to come back here.

Positioning the Pop Outs

#menu li {
/* make the list elements a containing block for the nested lists */
position: relative;
}

#menu ul ul ul {
position: absolute;
top: 0;
left: 100%; /* to position them to the right of their containing block */
width: 100%; /* width is based on the containing block */
}

The
position: relative;
applied to the
#menu li
makes the

elements into containing blocks for the nested

elements.

We only want to apply positioning to third level nested lists and deeper so the
#menu ul ul ul
targets that and the popout is positioned over to the right edge of their containing block (parent

element)

This now shows all the popouts in their correct position, remember to view with a non-IE browser.

Hiding and Revealing using
:hover

div#menu ul ul ul,
div#menu ul ul li:hover ul ul
{display: none;}

div#menu ul ul li:hover ul,
div#menu ul ul ul li:hover ul
{display: block;}

This bit could be simplified with the use of child selectors, unfortunately we have to use more specific descendant selectors in order for IE to understand.

This now achieves what we want, in a non-IE browser.

Fixing it for IE!

body {
behavior: url(csshover.htc); /* call hover behaviour file */
font-size: 100%; /* enable IE to resize em fonts */
}
#menu ul li {
float: left; /* cure IE5.x "whitespace in lists" problem */
width: 100%;
}
#menu ul li a {
height: 1%; /* make links honour display: block; properly */
}

#menu a, #menu h2 {
font: bold 0.7em/1.4em arial, helvetica, sans-serif;
/* if required use em's for IE as it won't resize pixels */
}

The above is the entire conditional CSS which we use to target IE/Windows only. It enables us to call the hover behaviour file and also to input some other IE “workaround” CSS without affecting other browsers.

Providing the
csshover.htc
file has been saved to the same directory as the file you’re working on you should see that the popouts are now appearing on hover as expected.

The complete code now looks like this, you can now view and admire your work.

Horizontal CSS Dropdown and Popout Menu

#menu {
width: 100%;
background: #eee;
float: left;
}
#menu ul {
list-style: none;
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
width: 12em;
float: left;
}

The above sets the width onto the individual lists,

‘s, this time as the need to float side by side to make them fit into whatever horizontal space is available to them. This horizontal width is determined by setting the width of the
#menu div
itself. The
#menu div
is also floated in order to “contain” it’s floated descendants.

Then we apply the required formatting to the

headings and the

anchors, again I’m using the same formatting as the vertical menu

#menu a, #menu h2 {
font: bold 11px/16px arial, helvetica, sans-serif;
display: block;
border-width: 1px;
border-style: solid;
border-color: #ccc #888 #555 #bbb;
margin: 0;
padding: 2px 3px;
}

#menu h2 {
color: #fff;
background: #000;
text-transform: uppercase;
}

#menu a {
color: #000;
background: #efefef;
text-decoration: none;
}

#menu a:hover {
color: #a00;
background: #fff;
}

Color to taste.

Positioning the Popout Menus and Dropdown Menus

#menu li {position: relative;}

#menu ul ul {
position: absolute;
z-index: 500;
}

#menu ul ul ul {
top: 0;
left: 100%;
}

The position: relative; on the

elements establish containing blocks for the descendant

elements.

All secondary levels and deeper are given position: absolute; and a high z-index in order to make them appear, drop down above following content. the third level and deeper lists are the ones we want to move so “offset” positioning co-ordinates only required to be input onto them.

Hiding and Revealing using
:hover

This time we actually do want to hide the second level menu (top choice) as we only want the

heading, inside the top level

to remain visible.

div#menu ul ul,
div#menu ul li:hover ul ul,
div#menu ul ul li:hover ul ul
{display: none;}

div#menu ul li:hover ul,
div#menu ul ul li:hover ul,
div#menu ul ul ul li:hover ul
{display: block;}

The
display: block;
rules show the three levels being activated with the
display: none;
rules being entered afterwards to more specifically hide the unwanted (deeper nested) lists (counteract them).

View the results so far.

Fix it for IE!

The complete conditional CSS is the same as the vertical menu’s code and looks like this:

body {
behavior: url(csshover.htc);
font-size: 100%;
}

#menu ul li {float: left; width: 100%;}
#menu ul li a {height: 1%;}

#menu a, #menu h2 {
font: bold 0.7em/1.4em arial, helvetica, sans-serif;
}

The complete CSS Horizontal Menu example.

Summary

So that’s it there has been some nuances left out like background images etc.. But the basics of hover, positioning and getting it to be resizable and compatible with IE/Windows 5+, (sorry won’t work in IE/Mac) were the major requirements here.

What we have here is the bare bones of any particular style of dropdown you would like to create, background images, extra class names etc. an be used to spice it up, but most of all the HTML has remained clean throughout meaning it’s very accessible to all UA‘s and Search Engine spiders.

The other main thing I would say is that please always develop in a non-IE environment as IE workarounds are unfortunately as necessary as CSS hacks were a couple of years ago. I hope you see that CSS driven menus are firmly within our grasp because we can work around IE quite easily thanks to well known research into it’s foibles in the last few years.

There is a technical introduction covering both versions as well as a more detailed tutorial for each menu on tanfa CSS site, for those that want to know more about the “hows and whys”.

Regular Health Mistakes

All of us make little health mistakes that cause damage to our bodies in the long run – simply because we are unaware we are doing something wrong. Here are some of the most common mistakes made by many of us.

Crossing our legs
Do you cross your legs at your knees when sitting? Although we may believe that this is the lady-like elegant way to sit, sitting this way cuts down circulation to your legs. If you don”t want varicose veins to mar the beauty of your legs and compromise your health, uncross your legs every time you realise you have one knee on top of the other. The best way to sit is to simply place both legs together on the floor, balancing your weight equally. If you feel like changing position, instead of crossing your legs, simply move both legs together to one side. As an alternative, you could also consider crossing your legs loosely at the ankles. This is a classically elegant way to sit, and is far better for your legs and your health than sitting with your legs crossed at your knees.

Not changing our toothbrush
How often do you change your toothbrush? Most of us wait until most of the bristles have either fallen off, or are in such bad shape that we”d be embarrassed to pull out our brush in public. However, since not many of us need to pull out our brush in public, we carry on with our frayed one until we lose it. Replace your toothbrush often. Damaged bristles can harm the enamel, and don”t massage your gums well. If you find brushing your teeth a pain like I do, but know you must do it, you might as well be doing it right. Imagine going through the annoyance of brushing your teeth twice a day only to find out that you”re damaging your enamel every time you clean your teeth. Also, use a brush with soft bristles unless your dentist has advised otherwise.

Eating out often
There are oils that are high in cholesterol, and oils that cause little harm and are better for your heart. However, no matter how light the oil is, it is never a good idea to eat too much of it. Avoid fried foods.Remember that in all probability your favourite Indian food restaurant throws a huge, HUGE chunk of butter in a tiny bowl of dal. Rita, who worked in the kitchen of a 5 star hotel, was shocked when she saw the cook chop a 500gm butter slab in half, and throw half into a Paneer Makhani dish. No wonder the customers left licking their fingers. And no wonder they felt so stuffed and heavy afterwards. Limit outdoor eating unless you know that you”re getting served light and healthy food.- google_ad_client = “pub-0312102270753541″; google_alternate_ad_url = “http://www.funonthenet.in/mambots/content/google_adsense_script.html”; google_ad_width = 336; google_ad_height = 280; google_ad_format = “336x280_as”; google_ad_channel = “4782780515″; google_ad_type = “text_image”; google_color_border = “F5F6FC”; google_color_bg = “F5F6FC”; google_color_link = “0078C8″; google_color_url = “000000″; google_color_text = “000000″; google_language = ‘en’; //–> indow.google_render_ad();

Skipping breakfast
Never, ever skip breakfast. Remember, when you wake up in the morning it”s been around 10-12 hours since your last meal. Your body needs food now, more than at any other time. Eat a heavy breakfast. You will then be busy through the day, and the calories will get expended quickly. If you are trying to diet, eat a light dinner. Here are some more common health mistakes we make. Being informed and making a few changes can help make us feel a whole lot better.

High heels
High heels sure look great, but they’re murder for your back. This however doesn’t mean you should steer clear of stilettos. Wear them, but not when you know you will be walking around a lot. Wear them when going out for lunch or dinner – when the only walking you will be doing is to your car, to the table, and back. Avoid high heels when you are going somewhere on foot. If you are constantly tempted to wear your heels, take a good look at your flats. Is there something about them you dislike? Invest in a new pair of beautiful flats or shoes with a low heel. Buy something you love, that you will enjoy wearing. If possible, get a matching bag. You will then enjoy your flats as much as you do your heels.

Sleeping on a soft bed
You don’t have to sleep on the floor be kind to your back, but do make sure you have a firm mattress. Although a mattress on springs is soft and lovely to sink into, it’s bad for your back. If you already have an old bed with springs, you don’t need to invest in a new one – simply get a thick wooden plank put over the springs, and place the mattress on the plank. Similarly, if your mattress is old and lumpy, throw it out and get a new one. Your neck and your back will thank you. The same rule applies to sofas. If you will be spending hours on a sofa, get a firm yet comfortable one. Sofas you completely sink into are not the best idea.

Pillows
No matter how comfortable sleeping with ten cushions is, have pity on your neck and resist. Sleep with one pillow, and make sure it is not too thick. If your pillow gets lumpy, discard it and go for a new one. Get a thin pillow if you sleep on your stomach, and something a little thicker if you sleep on your back, to give your neck adequate support

Not exercising
So all of us know we should exercise more, but many of us don’t. This is a health mistake we consciously make! And why is that? Simply because we refuse to admit the damage we are causing to our bodies by not working out. A number of people only start working out once they’ve experienced a warning signal. Don’t wait for a heart attack to strike before you decide to opt for a lifestyle change. Make the change now. You don’t need to train for the marathon to be in top shape. Half an hour of brisk walking three to four times a week will make a world of difference to your health. You could then increase this to forty minutes, four times a week – and you’re all set. If you haven’t exercised for a week, you’re making a mistake.

He amassed a record 1,093 patents covering key innovations and minor improvements in wide range of fields, including telecommunications, electric power, sound recording, motion pictures, primary and storage batteries, and mining and cement technology. As important, he broadened the notion of invention to encompass what we now call innovation-invention, research, development, and commercialization-and invented the industrial research laboratory. Edison’s role as an innovator is evident not only in his two major laboratories at Menlo Park and West Orange in New Jersey but in more than 300 companies formed worldwide to manufacture and market his inventions, many of which carried the Edison name, including some 200 Edison illuminating companies.

Early Life

Edison was born in 1847 in the canal town of Milan, Ohio, the last of seven children. His mother, Nancy, had been a school teacher; his father, Samuel, was a Canadian political firebrand who was exiled from his country. The family moved to Port Huron, Michigan, when Thomas was seven. He attended school briefly but was principally educated at home by his mother and in his father’s library.

In 1859 Edison began working on a local branch of the Grand Trunk Railroad, selling newspapers, magazines, and candy. At one point he printed a newspaper on the train, and he also conducted chemical experiments in a baggage-car laboratory. By 1862 he had learned enough telegraphy to be employed as an operator in a local office.

From 1863 to 1867 he traveled through the Midwest as an itinerant telegrapher. During these years he read widely, studied and experimented with telegraph technology, and generally acquainted himself with electrical science.

Early Inventive Career

In 1868 Edison became an independent inventor in Boston. Moving to New York the next year, he undertook inventive work for major telegraph companies. With money from those contracts he established a series of manufacturing shops in Newark, New Jersey, where he also employed experimental machinists to assist in his inventive work.

Edison soon acquired a reputation as a first-rank inventor. His work included stock tickers, fire alarms, methods of sending simultaneous messages on one wire, and an electrochemical telegraph to send messages by automatic machinery. The crowning achievement of this period was the quadruplex telegraph, which sent two messages simultaneously in each direction on one wire.

The problems of interfering signals in multiple telegraphy and high speed in automatic transmission forced Edison to extend his study of electromagnetism and chemistry. As a result, he introduced electrical and chemical laboratories into his experimental machine shops.

Near the end of 1875, observations of strange sparks in telegraph instruments led Edison into a public scientific controversy over what he called “etheric force,” which only later was understood to be radio waves.

Menlo Park

 In 1876, Edison created a freestanding industrial research facility incorporating both a machine shop and laboratories. Here in Menlo Park, on the rail line between New York City and Philadelphia, he developed three of his greatest inventions.

Urged by Western Union to develop a telephone that could compete with Alexander Graham Bell’s, Edison invented a transmitter in which a button of compressed carbon changed its resistance as it was vibrated by the sound of the user’s voice, a new principle that was used in telephones for the next century.

While working on the telephone in the summer of 1877, Edison discovered a method of recording sound, and in the late fall he unveiled the phonograph. This astounding instrument brought him world fame as the “Wizard of Menlo Park” and the “inventor of the age.”

Finally, beginning in the fall of 1878, Edison devoted thirty months to developing a complete system of incandescent electric lighting. During his lamp experiments, he noticed an electrical phenomenon that became known as the “Edison effect,” the basis for vacuum-tube electronics.

He left Menlo Park in 1881 to establish factories and offices in New York and elsewhere. Over the next five years he manufactured, improved, and installed his electrical system around the world.

West Orange Laboratory

In 1887, Edison built an industrial research laboratory in West Orange, New Jersey, that remained unsurpassed until the twentieth century. For four years it was the primary research facility for the Edison lighting companies, and Edison spent most of his time on that work. In 1888 and 1889, he concentrated for several months on a new version of the phonograph that recorded on wax cylinders.

Edison worked with William Dickson from 1888 till 1893 on a motion picture camera. Although Edison had always had experimental assistants, this was the clearest instance of a co-invention for which Edison received sole credit.

In 1887 Edison also returned to experiments on the electromagnetic separation and concentration of low-grade iron and gold ores, work he had begun in 1879. During the 1890′s he built a full-scale plant in northern New Jersey to process iron ore. This venture was Edison’s most notable commercial failure.

Later Years

After the mining failure, Edison adapted some of the machinery to process Portland cement. A roasting kiln he developed became an industry standard. Edison cement was used for buildings, dams, and even Yankee Stadium.

In the early years of the automobile industry there were hopes for an electric vehicle, and Edison spent the first decade of the twentieth century trying to develop a suitable storage battery. Although gas power won out, Edison’s battery was used extensively in industry.

In World War I the federal government asked Edison to head the Naval Consulting Board, which examined inventions submitted for military use. Edison worked on several problems, including submarine detectors and gun location techniques.

By the time of his death in 1931, Edison had received 1,093 U.S. patents, a total still untouched by any other inventor. Even more important, he created a model for modern industrial research.
